Edwards and Gary O'Neil represent the initial names under consideration to succeed the former manager as manager of Wolverhampton Wanderers.
The previous coach was sacked on the weekend following the team's ten-game without a victory start to the Premier League campaign.
Furthermore Edwards and O'Neil - each of whom have historic associations to the club - are among the names to be evaluated by the Wolves leadership.
The manager is presently at another club, which would pose a potential obstacle to his appointment at Molineux.
Nevertheless the former Luton Town manager - who played over a century of games for Wolves during his time as a player - is said to be a strong candidate for the position.
The mid-career manager is said to have backing from the Wolves directors as they start the search of appointing a fresh head coach.
Gary O'Neil is also appearing as a surprise contender, even though he would be a surprising appointment given he was sacked by Wolves in the previous winter.
The ex- West Ham player is out of work which means the club would not be required to pay any compensation.
